The epic failure of the Ford Edsel is legendary. I had heard about it since childhood, but never understood the particulars, why, what it looked like, what was the big deal.
Thanks to an interesting website, Oldies Television (at xoteria.com : http://xoteria.com/CH5.html), I was able to see the commercials from the late 50′s depicting the car and read about the story. It seems the car was hyper advertised while on the drawing board, but ultimately disappointed the public and was soundly rejected.
The idea that the American people will believe anything if told often enough is not a new idea.
The Ford Motor Company learned its lesson. Will Obama?
The entire progressive, socialist experiment is an experiment in indoctrination. It has worked sufficiently in every corner of the globe where it was implemented, at least long enough to subjugate the populations and destroy or prevent prosperity.
Personally, I think that if the American people could resist the Edsel, which while incomparably ugly, was well-built and serviceable, I think we can resist the lure of Obamacare, and the subsequent descent into a nanny state of drones.
The least among us will never lose their affection for the socialist state, but they are, after all, the least among us and are deserving of our sympathy, if not our respect and hard-earned wealth, no matter how modest.
My son had a friend who constantly told tall tales, that were obviously pure hooey, but spoke with such certainty, that no one bothered to argue. He once admitted confidentially, that he really enjoyed getting people to believe lies. By his own incessant deception, he convinced himself that everyone he met was too stupid to see through his lies.
I suggested to my son that he let the fellow know that he wasn’t fooling anyone, they just didn’t care enough to waste their time arguing with him. He was not only making a fool of himself, but he was sowing distrust among all he encountered. But, my son didn’t want to hurt his feelings.
The problem we have with liberals is that it has never been worthwhile to argue with someone who lacks the integrity to ever admit their own folly. So, now we have allowed these folks to run amuck for far too long, and their folly and lies have wreaked havoc in our society and our economy. Imagine where the auto industry would have gone had the Edsel not been rejected?
So, now, feelings be damned. And for future reference, it is never a kindness to encourage a fool to believe he is wise or to permit a liar to believe that you believe him.
